Essential Radon Mitigation FAQs

Here is a list of our most frequent questions, but feel free to reach out for more information:

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that forms from the decay of uranium found in soil, rock, and water. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making it completely undetectable without specialized testing equipment. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, responsible for approximately 21,000 deaths each year according to the EPA.

Radon originates from the natural radioactive decay of uranium, which is present in varying concentrations in nearly all soils and rocks. As uranium breaks down, it produces radium, which then decays into radon gas. This gas moves upward through the soil and can enter buildings through cracks in foundations, construction joints, and gaps around service pipes.

Radon exists in outdoor air at low, generally harmless concentrations. However, radon becomes a serious concern when it accumulates inside enclosed spaces like homes, schools, and office buildings. Nearly one in every fifteen homes in the United States is estimated to have elevated radon levels at or above the EPA’s action level of 4 pCi/L.

pCi/L stands for picocuries per liter, which is the standard unit used to measure radon concentration in the air. A picocurie is a measure of radioactivity, specifically the rate at which radon atoms decay in a given volume of air. The EPA recommends taking action to reduce radon when levels reach 4 pCi/L or higher, and even considers levels between 2–4 pCi/L worth addressing if possible.

Radon enters homes primarily through the path of least resistance from the soil beneath and around the foundation. Common entry points include: cracks in concrete floors and walls; construction joints and gaps around service pipes; crawl spaces and sump pits; and porous concrete blocks. The pressure difference between the inside of a home and the surrounding soil creates a vacuum effect that pulls radon-laden air inward, making even well-sealed homes potentially vulnerable.

No, radon can affect homes of any age, construction type, or style. New construction can have elevated radon levels just as readily as older homes. The key factor is the concentration of uranium and radium in the surrounding soil and the specific construction characteristics that allow radon to enter and accumulate.
